The Top 100

Short post today.  Catching up from some extensive travel this week.  Looking forward to Thanksgiving week and some quality (quiet) time with the family and hopefully some gaming out on the Oregon coast.

Some of you have surely been following The One Hundred (final list here), an exercise aimed at identifying the top 100 games of all time.  The process involved surveying a group of gamers for their top 15 and combining the results to determine the ranking.

My geek score is 59 owned + 68 played = 127.

Some observations on the list:

  • I’m amazed at how many of the games I own, especially considering that I only started accumulating games two years ago.  At that time, my score would have been 10 or less, getting credit for the card games, backgammon, and Knizia’s Lord of the Rings.
  • There were few surprises for me on the list.  The omission I’m most surprised about is Amun-Re.
  • The games on the list that I haven’t played that I’m most interested in playing are Medici, Vinci, Die Macher, and Capitol.
  • The highest ranked game that I dislike is Tikal.  Next highest is Hoity Toity.

Lists are fun.

The games on the list that I haven’t played that I’m most interested in playing are I'm the Boss and Gipf.

The highest ranked game that I give a Thumbs Down rating to is Lord of the Rings, with Bohnanza and St. Pete right after it.

I'm at 53 owned + 72 played = 125. Highest ranked game I've never played is #14, Cosmic Encounter. Highest ranked game I'm not fond of is #5 Princes of Florence. Ones on the list I haven't played and would like to are #50 Goa and #97 McMulti.

I find a few things on that list rather interesting, and no - I haven't been following it.

Anyway - my geek numbers: 48 owned, 55 played. Two of them are games I've sold off.

Interestingly, if you just look at the top 50, I'm 31 owned, 34 played. I really tail off towards the bottom of the list.

Dave: I like I'm the Boss. You *must* play this game with Matthew.

Mike: Cosmic Encounter is fun. Let's get it out... maybe at Salishan.

I'm at 72 owned and 93 played = 165 (a bit scary, actually). The games I've not played that I'm most interested in are I'm the Boss, Breaking Away and War of the Ring.

Highest ranking game I'm not too fond of is probably #15, St. Petersburg (although it's on the "willing to play, just won't ask for it" list, rather than the "won't play at all" list).

The 7 games I've not played are:

    42. Bridge
    53. Daytona 500
    71. War of the Ring
    77. Breaking Away
    81. Spades
    97. McMulti

Of these, Daytona 500 is the only one I own (I have played it's descendants, Top Race and Detroit/Cleveland Grand Prix).

I'm 163. I wasn't sure how to score games like "poker" that involve you owning a deck of cards and chips, or Bridge that involves two decks of cards and maybe the little scorepad things.

    I'm not convinced 165, over 80% played/owned, is a good number.

Highest rated game not owned *and* played is St. Petersburg at #15.

And I'm all over CE at Salishan. I recommend six people and alcohol, or at least a couple of kids and a relaxed attitude. This is a game that more plays you than you play it, just the sort of thing Mike loves!

Whoops, put in two numbers. I realized that Tichu is the same as Gang of Four, so I tie Tim at 165.

One other note... Every one of these games that I own (and it's got to be well over 70) was something I kept, with the highest game rated I'm selling being Tichu.

Smarty Party is a *great* party game, although more cerebral than, say, Time's Up.
